I like stories of trust and honor, so I was excited to know if this is true. I had never heard this story before, so I started to research it. When he asked them how he could repay them for their kindness, they asked him to write a song about the plight of their people. ![]() He explained that the writer of the song got stranded in the desert when his car broke down and that some Cherokees helped him out. A co-worker heard me one day and told me that the song was written as a payment for a favor. I still like it and I like to play it on the flute. Anyway … as a youngster, I always liked the song “Cherokee Nation” by Paul Revere and the Raiders. ![]() I sometimes find it awkward that I know more about this instrument than most native folks. ![]() I explain how this wonderful instrument was one of the cultural components that was nearly lost, due to the “Kill the Indian, save the man” programs of the residential schools, etc. When I play the NAsF in public, I talk about the flute and share a bit about its history.
